i happened upon a set of zildjian sticks...gratis
its the first time Ive ever tried them and what made me take notice was the clear coating on it like all other sticks but this seemed to *grab* onto your hand.
some ingredient in the varnish gave it this quality. Im pretty much a pro mark guy and every thing Ive tried from them doesn't
have this kind of *gripping* varnish?

anyone else that use other sticks have this sticky coating?

I personally don't like that type of thing. I prefer wood sticks with minimal coating on them. Being very picky though when it comes to sticks I will pull out 15-20 pairs from the shoot at the drum store and maybe, MAYBE, find 3-5 pairs that are acceptable. Those varnishes to me always make the fulcrum at uneven points and I hate the way they grip my hand I use a very loose technique and the stick floats in my hand.

have you guys ever sanded part of the coatin off. i have done this right at the folcrum only but left the rest on there. seemed to keep the stick or at least helped me keep the stick in the same place

Like I said I spend too long finding the right sticks to do something like that. My sticks tend to not move away from where I hold them anyway. They did in my earlier years though, just lots of rudiments on the practice pad to fix that one.

I like unvarnished sticks and have been known to sand some that weren't. My hands don't sweat when playing or at other times but I just like the feel of non-varnished sticks or those with a matt finish generally.

I'm with Pete on this one. I like "Naturals" from promark, raw wood - no finish. I, unlike some people, have a harder time holding on to the sticks, as time goes on.

I would give them a try at the right price!

Thanks for the info!

The feel of the stick doesn't bother me much - though I hate the feeling of stick that tries to bond with your fingers. I normally use a few pieces of medical tape which works wonders for me - it absorbs sweat, and provides a little bit of grip without bonding to your skin.

I use unvarnished. I never liked Dips or varnished, anything that causes unnecessary friction between the stick and hand.

I have used many of these sticks over the years and really liked them. It depends on the person. After breaking my wrist twice, I try all kinds of things. I've tried grips that when heated they start to grip. I've used dips anything I can get my hands on. I like all kinds of new things and try them often. Check out the line of speed sticks, I've been using this line for a while now. Some are funky looking, they're designed for all kinds of things. The grip sticks have many positive things about them. They aren't for everyone.

Coatings, gloves - and other gimmicks are like wearing contraceptives~
Sure, you can get through the gig.....But it's not like the natural feel.

recnetly they all groan when I walk into the music store an go over to the drum stick section.
I roll them o to no end and pick out the ones i want, on top of that stick are usually way different in weight which translates into a different pitch for each drum stick...arrrgh
its hard to do even rolls if one stick sounds 3 octaves higher than the other!
