Posted by: paul Posted on: Mar 15, 2012 9:23 AM For the last several years I've basically gigged with two setups: 12/13/15/16/22 for rock/big band stuff, and 10/12/14/15/20 for small groups. It lets me change my sound without having to retune four toms and a bass drum every time. But lately I've been dissatisfied with the "jazz" set, and rehearsing my new group, along with a dearth of gigs, has given me a chance to experiment with different setups. I've also been thinking about going to a 10/12/14/16 setup with either bass drum depending on the gig. So the last few weeks I've been hauling drums and racks in and out of the garage, playing them with the new group, and testing different options. The other nice part of this is having a percussionist who can play my drums and let me listen from an audience perspective. After all that I finally decided to leave everything alone. I did change my mind about my jazz hihats and main ride. The 22" K Custom will replace my 1959 22" A medium, and a mismatched pair of 14" A's will replace another pair of 14" A's. I feel a little silly having gone to all this trouble to change so little, but it's been really nice to get my gigging setups in the house to play with tuning and hardware, and I feel a lot more confident in the sounds and setups going into a weekend where both sets are going to get used.

Posted by: StillKicken Posted on: Mar 31, 2012 6:32 AM Don't feel silly Paul, it's always good to give ourselves a reality check form time to time. I do this type stuff all the time. Depending on space I change from a three piece to 5 piece and have almost stopped using my rack by mounting 10" and 12" toms plus two 18" cymbals on the bass and using a 16" or 18" floor tom when space is available plus the hauling around of big toms and big bass. There have been times I'll only use a 8" and 10" toms. I don't have the luxury of anyone in our bands that knows anything about drums. So changing sizes, well they have no clue. I have the plug in type spurs on the bass and noticed by having too much weight mounted I'm bending the lock bolts holding the spurs in place. So I'm going back to rack system for most of my gigs. Paul, you would be prod of me I even purchased a new rack system. I'll go into that later in another thread. sherm

Posted by: paul Posted on: Mar 31, 2012 8:17 AM One good thing that came out of all this is that I'm pretty happy again with how I'm doing things. It was nice to have the chance to try different setups. I did decide to change the cymbal setup on my "small" setup after rehearsing and then playing a gig with it. The modified setup will be more like that of my "big" set. I've also played a couple of things with two toms and two cymbals on stands, and will be using that on occasion. It's nice to have options. Congratulations on the new rack. I can't wait for details.
