I thought I would share this:

Musician Wisdom
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You should never be jealous of another musician. Use them for inspiration and learn from them but jealousy is not good for you.
Don't walk on other musicians to get where you're going. We're all in this world together and should work together.
Groove is super-important but don't underestimate the value of having a sufficient musical vocabulary to play maturely.
Look back into history. It teaches many lessons about where we are now in music.
Play every gig like it's your last one. This will ensure that you are playing your best!
Protect your reputation. It's a small world and people talk. Use good judgement with the things you say and do.
Not because I think I am better than anyone else. If they talk to me in person the way they do on the forum they might get a black eye.~Maddrums25
Good advice...but I can't play every gig as if it's my last one, because for my actual last gig I'd love to set my drums on fire Big Smile
I wouldn't set my good drums on fire (assuming that by the time I reach a point where I have more than one kit and do a lot of gigging), so maybe I'd have to get a second set just like my good drums to set on fire. Maybe some DWs with the flame custom graphic...Blush
Gosh Holly why do you always quote me? Clown I especially liked the groove advice and the Good Judgement one. They really stand out to me for some reason.
Those are some real nice words Holly, good words to live by in all aspects of life.
There was a time when I worried about playing in front of a house full of musicians. I play mostly basic groves and keep it simple with some extra surprises, of feeling the music. I expressed my concern to a new friend (guitar player) at one of these gatherings. He said; just play it your way, then you will be relaxed and if you are relaxed you will be performing at your best and we all learn from each other. It works, it really does. I have even received compliments from other drummers.
Holly, I’m not trying to brag here it’s just an example but, you know, if everyone lived by words of wisdom like you expressed this world would be a better place.
Thank you,
Sherm
I like the history relevance.
I am a firm believer in getting drummers to not only listen too historic drummers and their styles but trying to emulate them before leaping frogging straight into Dave Weckl.
In particular, one can learn a lot about being tight with tempo and being dynamic, but yet light in touch.
My grandfather was a well known musician in the Windsor area and started many bands that are still going today over 20 years after he died. He had much similar advice that can be added.
1. Never let yourself THINK you know so much you can't be taught more.
2. Always try to see every musician you meet on your instrument as a learning opportunity. You can learn much from a "Beginner"
3. Always give back some of which you love so much.
4. Always work hard to leave a good impression of yourself. A bad impression is easier to make and harder to break.
5. Be serious but always have fun playing your music.
6. Practice at home, rehearse with your group.
7. Humility is worth more then unrighteous pride and speaks louder then words.
There are more but I need to look in his journals to find them.
