For the last several years I've basically gigged with two setups: 12/13/15/16/22 for rock/big band stuff, and 10/12/14/15/20 for small groups. It lets me change my sound without having to retune four toms and a bass drum every time. But lately I've been dissatisfied with the "jazz" set, and rehearsing my new group, along with a dearth of gigs, has given me a chance to experiment with different setups. I've also been thinking about going to a 10/12/14/16 setup with either bass drum depending on the gig.
So the last few weeks I've been hauling drums and racks in and out of the garage, playing them with the new group, and testing different options. The other nice part of this is having a percussionist who can play my drums and let me listen from an audience perspective.
After all that I finally decided to leave everything alone. I did change my mind about my jazz hihats and main ride. The 22" K Custom will replace my 1959 22" A medium, and a mismatched pair of 14" A's will replace another pair of 14" A's.
I feel a little silly having gone to all this trouble to change so little, but it's been really nice to get my gigging setups in the house to play with tuning and hardware, and I feel a lot more confident in the sounds and setups going into a weekend where both sets are going to get used.
