BrandonPorter wrote: Yes. I use these rubber "puzzle mats" that interlock. They are approximately 2' by 2', and they stack nicely in the van on top of my bass drum case, or underneath a case if need be.
12 of them gives you enough floor space for any sized kit, and can be configured many different ways to accommodate non-rectangular stage spaces.
EDIT: I bought the ones that are all black on one side, so I just use the black side up and usually it's not even noticeable. Keeps me from sliding, and it protects the floor I'm setting up on. The prices on that link are not what I paid; I got a set of 6 from Sam's for about $15. Two sets and you're good.
Excellent idea -
I used to own an industrial mat - rubber bottom/very low-pile carpet bonded on top. Worked like a charm.
It was being thrown out at work and I brought it in and said, "Hey, someone left this outside ..." The Boss said, "No, I left it for the trash because <forgot the reason>." I told him I could use something like this because <forgot how I justified it> - and it was mine. It was stolen with the drum kit back in the day.
{ Actually, the whole drum kit was stolen; but I was robbed of my Zildjians and my Slingerland Super Sound King Snare drum - the only worthwhile pieces of the kit; something I miss dearly to this day } .
