Students will have a better understanding of the pandeiro, and its possibilities on contemporary music.
• Introduction and brief history of the pandeiro
• Demonstration of different tones and idiosyncrasies of the instrument
• Hand position and preliminary exercises
• Technique exercises
• Pattern and phrasing development
• Brazilian rhythms: Learn one or two rhythms
• Hear pandeiro in non-native Brazilian music, like jazz, klezmer, drum and bass, funk, hip hop, electronica (music listening and/or performing)

• Mention of the most important pandeiro players in the world

Jose Gurria-Cardenas-Bio
Drum Set/ Percussion player.
Founder of Ethos Trio with 5 cds released and touring credits in China, Brazil, Holland, Germany, Peru, Cuba, USA (Kennedy Center, Washington D.C, Notre Dame University, Indiana.), Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, and Guatemala. As a percussionist, he has played with Maria Schneider, Patrice Rushen, Lamont Dozier, and James Ingram with the Thornton Jazz Orchestra. He is completing an M.M. in Jazz Studies at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he has imparted a pandeiro Masterclass along with Thornton's percussion faculty Angel Figueroa, and Aaron Serfaty. He holds a B.M. from Berklee College of Music.
