No matter how lost you are music can bring you back home. Anecdotal evidence has pointed to this phenomena for hundreds of years. Numerous scientific studies have been undertaken in recent years to try to understand the power music seems to wield. But finally people will be able to sit down with family and friends to witness a feature film which addresses this magic, through exploration of a case study by Oliver Sacks (“Awakenings”) which chronicles the journey of a father and son adjusting to cerebral trauma and a lifetime of missed opportunities.
Based on the inspiring true story, Lionsgate debuts The Music Never Stopped on DVD and Digital Download this August. StarringJ.K. Simmons (Juno), Lou Taylor Pucci (Fast Food Nation), Cara Seymour (An Education) and Emmy® winner Julia Ormond (Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” 2010), the film was an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and the recipient of the Heartland Truly Moving Picture award. “…A powerful look at music’s power to unite where it once divided” (The Onion AV Club), The Music Never Stopped features a stellar soundtrack including The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Mickey Hart performed with Bob Weir for the movie premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Once close, Gabriel (Pucci) and his father Henry (Simmons) have spent the last 20 years estranged from one another. But after Gabriel is diagnosed with a brain tumor that doesn’t allow his mind to create new memories, he must return home to his family. Desperate to reconnect with his son, Henry hires Dianne (Ormond), a music therapist to help engage Gabriel. Raw and emotional, the father and son are finally able to find a common bond through classic rock music in this touching film that “honors the ability of music to heal” (The Hollywood Reporter).
THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED – MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE is available now from Rhino at all digital music retailers and is also available exclusively on CD at Amazon.com. The soundtrack features six Grateful Dead tracks, including three previously released live recordings, as well as classics from Bob Dylan, Steppenwolf, Donovan, and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
