Remo Belli Delivers Custom Drum to School for Autistic Persons

Friday, May 4, Los Olivos, CA- Whether you play in a rock band or for the Philadelphia Philharmonic, there is a good chance that your drumhead says “REMO”. Remo Belli, founder and CEO of Remo, Inc, delivered a custom drum table to the Santa Ynez Valley Family School as a donation for Hidden Wings, a program for autistic young adults. The specialized drum table is designed to produce a bandwidth that simulates a heartbeat, which creates a connection to persons with autism. Belli joined in a drum circle with Hidden Wings and SYV Family School students.

Remo Belli’s company, Remo, Inc., manufactures drums and drumheads in Valencia, CA. Mr. Belli, a longtime advocate of drumming for wellness said, “I know now that a part of our company is in the life enhancement business.” Remo has supported many organizations that improve peoples’ lives through rhythm and funded research that has shown drumming to build the immune system, reduce stress, and improve mood.

Rv. Jim and Julia Billington, the founders of Hidden Wings, and Family School parents, were at the school to meet Mr. Belli and accept the drum. Julianne Tullis-Thompson, Head of School, welcomed them to the Preschool garden area, where the drum was presented and the whole school was gathered.

Remo explained to the crowd how the 40 inch diameter drum was made with a special drumhead to produce lower pitched sounds and a second layer was added to muffle the sound so it is not too loud. The drum can also be tuned to achieve just the right tone for working with autistic persons.

Each grade from SYV Family School took turns drumming together on the table drum including young adults on the autistic spectrum from Hidden Wings.

Hidden Wings has worked closely with Aimee Carroll, the Music and Drama specialist at SYV Family School, and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, to develop this specialized drumming program. Hart’s long association with Belli lead all four partners to work together to design a drum that would best suit the needs of persons on the autistic spectrum. Belli said "This is a one-of-a-kind. If it works there will be more.”

“The Family School’s partnership with Hidden Wings is a natural fit with our commitment to help each child reach their full potential. We are happy to share our resources with Hidden Wings and support this innovative program in any way we can,” according to Tullis-Thompson.

Aimee Carroll, of SYV Family School, has worked with Hidden Wings since its inception. She has recently completed training with international leaders in the field of drumming and its affects on learning, healing and community.

Mickey Hart, a pioneer in therapeutic uses of drumming, worked Billington for two years before choosing Hidden Wings for his first pilot program for drumming with autistic persons. This pilot project, located in the Santa Ynez Valley, is the first of its kind in the country.
