Remo®'s Drum Days LA - Diversity through Drumming
In partnership with Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks
Valencia, CA - Remo Drums celebrates its 50th anniversary by giving back to the city that has been home for 50 years. Drum Days LA is a multicultural celebration of the power of rhythm, a power that unites people in joy and celebration. The theme Diversity through Drumming reinforces the universal appeal of drumming. Today drumming is woven into education, therapy, community, recreation, health and wellness, and group teambuilding. Remo has been in the forefront of these movements, and they are now bringing the unifying power of drumming to communities that may not otherwise get this opportunity– the inner city.
Beginning July 12 and continuing through August 22, Remo, in partnership with LA’s Department of Recreation and Parks, will sponsor a series of weekly drumming workshops with low income youths from 5 urban rec centers. The kids, ranging in age from 8 to 14 and totaling roughly 35, will form a drum ensemble as part of their summer camp program. Each group will be taught a culturally specific drum performance by a prominent Remo master percussionist. They will learn African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Brazilian drumming, and in the process learn about the similarities of many diverse cultures. A perfect metaphor for LA.
The kids will then perform their composition at one of three community Drum Days concerts on consecutive Saturdays in August. They will join headline performers like Grammy Award winning master conguero Poncho Sanchez, djembe master Leon Mobley, and in the process experience the pride and joy of performing for their community.
“Remo, Inc. is encouraging participation in the recreational use of musical instruments as a life enhancement process which has been validated through extensive research. Group drumming has been demonstrated to be one of the most accessible group activities for this purpose” said Remo D. Belli, CEO/Founder, Remo, Inc. Remo will document this program in hopes that other Departments of Recreation and Parks around the country will be inspired to integrate these programs into their community offerings as a way to inspire and encourage young people to do something powerful and uplifting.
And then for the Drum Days finale, Remo will do something unprecedented: pass out drums to the audience for an impromptu community drum circle. “Everybody will be infected by the rhythm. It promises to be a hot August!” exclaimed Chris Hart, Marketing Promotions Manager, Remo.Inc.
