Inter-Generational Drum Circle Programs

by Robin Stallings

In April of 2005,New Broadway Productions, Inc. began sponsoring a drum circle program three days a week at the Bethany Towers’ Retirement Home. Throughout the past two years, this partnership with Bethany Towers in providing the Drum Circle Program within their retirement community has been a successful opportunity to create a beneficial program that assists in prolonging and enhancing the life of the residents during their "Golden Years".

Located in the heart of Hollywood, California, it has become a hugely popular activity with approximately twenty-five senior citizen residents who participate, one of whom just celebrated her 100th birthday in November!

This wellness program has provided the residents with a very unique socially interactive activity that has been mentally and emotionally beneficial for everyone, from the most independent residents to the most high-level dementia residents. It has been an activity that assists the staff in successfully working with dementia residents, helping to stimulate some of the sensory perceptions they may still maintain, when they are unable to focus and participate in any other activity. No other activity offered by the facility comes close to the success that this program has had within the retirement community. During 2006, these senior citizen residents have voluntarily traveled to other retirement facilities to introduce this program, such as Westwood Plaza, Downey Retirement Home, Rosemead California Mission Inn and Pasadena Highlands to share their joy and enthusiasm for the Drum Circle Program.

These retirement folks have recently been involved in introducing the NBP Drum Circle Program in several inter-generational drumming events, interacting with over 200 school children. These events include the North Hollywood First Christian Church Children’s Music Camp in July, the Hollywood Arts Council Children’s Festival at Paramount Studios in August, and the First Christian Church Annual Family Picnic in October. In December, the residents participated in a combined inter-generational drum circle event with the LACER After School Enrichment Program with four Hollywood area junior high schools, and NBP is currently working to establish this event as an ongoing Drum Circle Program

There are wonderful benefits from the inter-generational social interaction of our senior citizens within these children’s events. In creating the opportunity for this type of drum circle, we bring together two groups from both ends of the life spectrum, creating a valuable cultural experience that enriches all of their lives.
