Tuning the toms

Which pitch relationship between the batter and resonant heads to use is a matter of taste, but we’ve found the following three options work best for the bottom head: Tune it the same as the top head, a minor 2nd interval higher, or a minor 2nd lower.  When testing the pitch of the top or bottom head, be sure to mute the head not being tested.  For a more in-depth discussion of this topic, see one of our style-specific articles featured on the website.

Muffling options for toms include Remo Crown Control, Sound Control and Ring Control.

There are of course many different opinions about tuning drums, but following these guidelines will give you a starting point from which you can develop your ear and your own personal tuning preferences.
